Two watches, perhaps the two best known in the Rolex sports watch collection, that share such striking similarities that one could be forgiven for confusing them at a distance. They are just the fake Rolex Submariner Diver and the GMT-Master II.
To begin with, the similarities. The Submariner and the GMT-Master II are luxury watches. Both watches are currently housed in a so-called “super case” with a diameter of 40 mm and a ceramic or Cerachrom bezel insert. This case, made of 904L stainless steel, made its debut with the GMT in 2007. There are subtle differences between these two cases, but you need to put them side by side and look closely to see them.
However, where we start to see the differences between the Submariner and the GMT is in the bracelet. The Submariner features Rolex’s folding Oyster safety clasp and Glidelock extension system. On the other hand, the GMT’s Oyster features a more straightforward folding Oyster safety clasp with an Easylink 5 mm comfort extension bracelet. There have been several cases comparing the Submariner and the GMT.
The most significant difference between these two watches is the GMT’s extra hour hand, which is topped by a triangular “arrow.” This hand displays the hours in a 24-hour format. This fourth hand can be set independently of the main hour hand, while the 24-hour time is marked on the bi-directional rotating bezel.
When crossing time zones, one can move the GMT’s regular hour hand to reset to local time without affecting the position of the 24-hour hand. It makes such adjustments simple and routine for busy travelers.
Apart from that, the Submariner is a classic three-hand watch – hours, minutes, and seconds. It is available with or without a date function. It is available in all steel, two-tone steel and yellow gold, yellow and white gold, each with a revolutionary ceramic “Cerachrom” bezel.
Depending on the metal chosen, the bezel and dial color choice mean you have many variations for the Submariner. The unidirectional bezel is marked in typical dive watch fashion, with 5-minute increments, a number for every 10 minutes, and a 1-minute scale for the first 15 minutes.
On the other hand, the replica Rolex GMT Cerachrom bezel is marked in 24 one-hour increments. It is currently offered in several two-tone color schemes – black/blue “Batman” and red/blue “Pepsi,” or all black. So, there you have it. The two watches are siblings, almost identical, but both with their abilities.
